Small wineries, small production can equal big results. That’s something many of our listeners love to learn about. Karen Cakebread is Founder of Ziata Wines in Napa Valley and spending time in the vineyard is her passion. Karen and I have chatted many times over the years but it been a long break till now. It was nice to be in a relaxed setting to talk and laugh as much as possible.
Listen to Karen on our Vino Lingo segment defining the term “Zipline”.
Is it possible to say we use the word “passion” too often? Not really. Winemakers like Pam Starr are the very definition of passion. She’s also great fun to chat with! Pam has been a dear friend for many years and a loyal follower of the podcast. Each time we talk we realize it can go all day. Wine is fun. And so are the amazing folks who make it happen.

Since the start of this podcast over 13 years ago I’ve interviewed Stu Smith several times. I’ve always enjoyed his candor and humor. He’s a very smart guy. This was one of the most fun and highly educating interviews I’ve done with Stu. I enjoyed every minute. Its also one of the few times we had an “audience” during the recording. Speedy and Lisa Baldwin, were at the winery for a tasting, and sat in on the recording, making for a good time. Stu has owned Smith-Madrone for 50 years now. Think about that before you listen. A fantastic accomplishment. Cheers to you, Stu.
Special thanks to Julie Ann Kodmur for arranging the interview.
