During the rainy vintage of 2011, we visited Mark Topel owner of Topel Winery in Hopland, California and featured him in Podcast #47. Hopland is located two hours north of San Francisco in Mendocino county, where Mark was making some magnificent wines. Topel was sold when Mark retired and now the new winemaker is Martin Bernal-Hafner. Martin’s experience makes him a good choice to take up the reigns at Topel Winery. We met with Martin at his home in Geyserville to talk about the future of Topel, which is very bright indeed.

First thing I must say is to give Alex Holman a great deal of credit for meeting with us to do this interview. The winery tasting room caught fire the day before our meeting, but Alex agreed to meet anyway. Notre Vue Estate is located in the town of Windsor, Sonoma County. Since there was major activity cleaning up after the fire, we met at their outdoor tasting space on the hill behind the winery. While Alex is the new winemaker at Notre Vue, he’s been in the business for quite some time and this is one crazy way to start a new job.
