A Winemaker’s journey can be best described as challenging. Those in love with the concept of making wine usually start in the cellar or maybe at harvest. Those who know, surviving harvest is the toughest time of all since winemakers grow out of harvest. Ian McClellan knew harvest well, then became Cellar Master and now, he is Assistant Winemaker at Anaba Wines in Sonoma. Ian is a personal friend and former employee of mine. I’m proud of his accomplishments and I’m proud to call him a friend. Plus he’s a darn nice guy.

A winemaker can work at a single winery or make wine for several wineries. Many become consultants. They can work with vineyards in varying parts of an AVA or vineyards all over the world. LaRue Wine is Katy Wilson’s own, plus she also makes wine for the Anaba label and other wineries. Her work is primarily in Sonoma but she does reach into other AVA’s. Katy has extensive experience in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay along with several other varietals. We chatted with Katy by phone last week to get caught up on the happenings in Sonoma wine country.

Just after high school, Ian McClellan was an intern at 5th Floor Recording Company in his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. 5th Floor is the home studio of Life Between the Vines. Needless to say it was thrilling to see Ian head West to join the wine industry and made a solid career for himself. Today, he is the Cellarmaster for Anaba Winery in Sonoma and we visited him and his wife back in November. After surviving harvest and the fires, there was a lot to talk about.
