Mendocino is an extraordinary place to visit in northern California if you are seeking the road less traveled in wine country. Ocean, redwoods and magnificent vineyards are just plain thrilling. We chatted by phone with Randy Meyer, Director of Winemaking & Operations at Barra of Mendocino just a couple weeks ago, learning about what it takes to farm in this part of the world. What does it take? Beer!

Imagine purchasing a vineyard in Mendocino County in 1955. Charlie Barra, did just that. His Italian heritage gave him the love of the land and agriculture at a time when Mendocino was very different. Charlie and his wife Martha worked side by side to grow Barra of Mendocino into high quality fine wine. Sadly, Charlie passed in 2019 but Martha is still at the helm to this very day and I was lucky to get a chance to talk to her. Mendocino wines are very special. Visiting there is even more so.
